-Meet the Team-

Karina Busch

Owner, Rider, and Trainer

Karina Busch, MD, is a part time Emergency Medicine physician, who runs and owns Halcyon Hill, LLC, along with her husband, Brent Sanders. As a lifelong horsewoman, Karina has had the opportunity to work with many exceptional trainers and coaches over the years. As a child she rode and showed in H/J shows, and as a teenager changed disciplines to eventing. In her younger years she spent countless hours in the saddle, especially in summer, when she attended Camp Longacres in East Aurora, NY, and was under the tutelage of Tom Kranz. Throughout high school she was fortunate enough to be a working student for Denny Emerson where she learned a great deal about proper training and management of competition horses.

During medical school and residency, she had little time for her equestrian pursuits, but did take a sabbatical from medicine for 2 years to concentrate on other interests. During that time, she worked for a famous nNatural hHorsemanship trainer, and also managed an Olympic event farm. It was there that she had the opportunity to work with Laurent Persyn, a French coach trained in the classical style of the Saumur School. This intense training re-ignited her passion for sShowjumping, and she returned to her H/J roots.

After completing a residency in Emergency Medicine in Lexington, she moved to Elizabethtown, KY, and started Halcyon Hill, LLC, with the goal of providing top quality young horses to the North American market. Karina gets a great deal of satisfaction from riding and training her young horses and finds it extremely rewarding to help guide them along their paths toward successful competitive futures. Over the years, all of the horses sold have gone on to competitive success in their new homes, many of them competing at the 1.40m level and above. Karina herself has successfully developed young horses up through the levels, including to winning at the Grand Prix level.

In addition to horses, Karina has a great love of dogs, and currently has 5 rescued dogs who are nice enough to share “their” home with her.

The farm has had several assistant trainers and exercise riders over the years who help keep the horses in show condition. Their assistance and expertise is invaluable and greatly appreciated.

Brent Sanders

Owner, Spouse, Farm Maintenance, Coach, Comic Relief

As Karina’s husband, Brent quickly discovered that dating and marrying a horse girl involves a lot of manual labor! Luckily, he truly enjoys working on the farm, and his time here has uncovered a love of horses and the sport of showjumping he didn’t know he had. Brent is a full-time flight paramedic for the busiest air medical service in KY. When he’s not flying around saving lives, he can be found building things, fixing anything that’s broken, and sometimes (rarely!) even riding a horse. As a former manager for his father’s commercial construction company, Sands Construction, he brings a wide range of skills to his job at the farm.

On the road at shows, Brent makes a very good groom, and it is usually just he and Karina with 4-5 horses at each show. His upbeat personality and quick wit keep everyone laughing, and his hard work helps keep the Halcyon Hill Team running smoothly. In spite of being a relatively new equestrian enthusiast, Brent’s keen observation skills and thirst for soaking up knowledge have allowed him to become invaluable as “eyes on the ground” while schooling and at shows.

Cecile Pierret

Assistant Trainer, Instructor, Barn Manager

Cecile came to Halcyon Hill in the summer of 2016 and has quickly proven herself to be invaluable to not only Karina and her horses, but also to our boarders and lesson clients. Her unique and varied equestrian experiences include Dressage, Hunter/Jumper, Racehorse Management, and Natural Horsemanship training. As such, she is able to offer expertise in a variety of areas, and has experience with a variety of training situations and issues. Her patience and competence with the young horses have helped them progress quickly and confidently in their training. We look forward to a continued collaboration with this talented young trainer, and are excited to be part of her journey to continue developing her riding and coaching skills. We are lucky to have her as part of our Halcyon Hill Team!
